Present Day Ikorodu
Ikorodu town has changed a lot in the last forty years or so. In terms of area, it had extended beyond the inner circular route (Old City Wall). The whole of the area called ‘Aiyeluja’, that is, both sides of Ayangburen Road had extended to Solomade, Etunrenren, Lowa and Olori (Both sided of Lagos Road). The Ojogbe area, Gbasemo, Oriwu Hotel area to Oluwakemi and Adaraloye Streets; both sides of Igbogbo Road including Owode and Oriwu College, Mabodu area including Solafin and so on.
The 1991 provisional census figure for Ikorodu Local Government area was 181,900. With the constant influx of people to Ikorodu from Lagos metropolis, the population of Ikorodu Township may have grown beyond 1,000,000. Our people are predominantly farmers or engaging in Agro-related industries and retail outlets. About 60% of the people are engaged in trade and other retail businesses in the town centre and greater Lagos Metropolis. This latter group shuttle daily between Ikorodu and Lagos. Our women are prominent traders in Lagos, they dominated the textile businesses especially in the vibrant ‘Gutter’ area of Lagos, Ita Balogun, Alakoro, Apongbo etc. Someone has estimated that our women folk are so successful in business that they own about 60% of the wealth of Ikorodu populace, put together. Ikorodu people are great socialists and elites; they are hospitable and entertaining.
Some people, from within and from outer neighbourhood, have criticised these crave of social excesses, amongst Ikorodu people and I believed that “too much of anything is bad”; therefore, social engagement and activities including lavishness, as a social norm should be moderated.
